Machined Punch with molded Urethane Die
Mirror finish lighting reflectors are formed with a tool steel punch and a matching molded to shape hard grade urethane bottom die, 8' long.
Embossing is a technique which creates a raised, or 3-dimensional, image on a piece of SHEET METAL. Conventional Embossing process involves making a matching and female die and by placing the sheet metal in between and applying pressure between the two dies to form the metal.
Making such tooling is very expensive.
A more economical way is to make only half of the tool , usually the protruding shape in a metal plate by CNC machining and by using a Urethane tool to form the metal against this machined plate.

Some shapes may be economical to machine a cavity in a metal plate and by using a flat sheet of metal to hold the blank tight and drawing the sheet metal into the cavity.

Bulging Urethane Tooling
We have made many bulging dies made of urethane, wherein the elastomeric property of Urethane, combined with excellent elastic memory and high load bearing capacity with minimal compression set make Urethane a superior material choice.
Stainless steel pan covers are bulged with a Urethane punch, by bulging the part into a split Steel die. Tube in the photo is formed with round urethane rod and a split steel die.
Chemical composition does make a difference in the life expectancy of a Urethane product, in a severe deflecting application as this example.
As seen in this video, we were brought in to study the urethane (red part in the middle of the die set) when they were getting only 4000 hits, and the customer wanted us to increase the life expectancy to 10000 hits. The first part that we made lasted over 175000 hits.
